Crazy Rich Asians

Firstly, every actor and actress in this film is so damn fine that it hurts my soul.  It’s distracting and appreciated.

Secondly, this was the GOOD’T movie I needed during Summer ’18, so thank you Director Chu and Writer of trilogy novels Kwan. There were moments that followed typical ‘rom-com-dram’ tropes, but there were def some surprises sprinkled in.

Thirdly, and I hope one day no one ever needs to emphasize this again regardless the race/culture/ethnicity highlighted…seeing Asian, Asian-American, and Asian Brits on screen in a way like we did with “Black Panther” in early 2018 was so emotional for me. I’ve waited for a story like this, with characters who look like my friends, and FINALLY they got their shine. SHINE BABY-BOO, SHINE!✨✨

Fourthly, I identified many cross-cultural and familial parallels throughout.  Mahjong is analogous to spades or dominoes for my fam.  Making dumplings with family is our snapping beans, peeling potatoes, or shucking corn (maybe, idk).  The massive respect for elders, especially matriarchs.  Nosy, gossiping aunties!!!! BWAHAHA! That did me in!

Finally, Constance Wu has been my boo since “Fresh Off the Boat” premiered. She’s always been vocal about proper representation of POC in Hollywood, especially Asian representation, so seeing her shine like the absolute queen she is and continues to be is so rewarding as a fan. And her dad taught me genetics in college, so there’s just an extra layer of admiration I feel for her.
