Fig

Coogler directed a compelling short about a young mother who will do anything for her daughter.  As she prepares for work at the corner of Figueroa Street, she understands her risky decisions may not bode well, but thinks about food + shelter + safety for her child. She depends on the assistance of a colleague to watch her daughter while leaves for a few minutes only to return to her daughter in police custody.

The direction and cinematography showcases a Coogler signature also seen in “Fruitvale Station”—a gritty, on location, uniquely specific story.  “Fig” offer a realism that speaks to the violence of sex workers and how breaking the vicious cycle for can be difficult and lead to a morbid reality.
