Free Guy

When Ryan Reynolds narrates anything, I will always hear Deadpool.

.

Perfect ensemble cast:

🎭 Best role for Lil Rel Howery’s hyperbolic personality.

🎭 Put Utkarsh Ambudkar in everything. More of him in comedies. (And also, Marvel, he is needed for that new Nightcrawler role. Just putting that out there. 👀)

🎭 I like Taika Waititi as a multi-hyphenate talent. I did not enjoy him as the villain in this film. I just was not convinced. I think it still worked, but something about his character’s profile was off and not convincing.

🎭 L O V E D Jodie Comer‘s hybrid character! She was dope in this!

🎭 Ryan was the best decision for “Guy.” It’s like it’s either him or Jim Carrey for this amplified character. But yea, it’s him. Gotta love the Canadians, eh? 🇨🇦

.

I enjoyed the directing and editing. There were too many details in this film and so much could have gone wrong. I was scanning the screen like a hawk tryin’ to peep a flub.

.

I did not anticipate liking this film, but this is a damn good action-comedy. 🥰🥰 “Free Guy” is animated and lively! The soundtrack and score did their effing jobs.

I would pay to know how much of the final cut was ad-libbed. The banter and choreography just hit and was tongue-in-cheek and perfect and I enjoyed it. 🥺😊

.

Loved the references to Disney-owned entertainment properties, including [redacted], [redacted], and [redacted].

I adored the fantastical imagery of the world watching the destruction of a video game server in real time and it being the disappearance of pixels within a game. That’s so new era meets early-2000s mixed multimedia CGI logic. I loved it.

.

“Free Guy” is an upbeat, light-hearted fantasy that does not take itself seriously, but the stakes are consequential and you want the good “Guy” to win.  Mission accomplished. 👍🏽👍🏽

To conclude, a collection of my favorite shots. Shouts to the cinematographer, George Richmond:
