Green Book

I hate this film’s advert poster, but I think it’s a lovely film. Following viewing, I dove into Donald Shirley’s catalog. I’d never heard of him prior to this film, and for that alone I’m really appreciative.

Ali and Mortensen are an odd pairing, but that’s precisely the point. I suspected this film would fit the ABC-123, formulaic nature of “Glory Road,” or “42,” or “Pride,”  you get the point, the “white savior” complex in movies about race/racial identity/overcoming racial discrimination. And not saying it doesn’t, it totally does and it’s actually the premise of the screenplay.

Loved the character’s dynamic, and shifts in power throughout.  The themes of questioning identity, specifically at the intersections of race, culture, sexual orientation, and socioeconomics, is applicable to our nation’s current discourse in discussing these social issues.

I appreciate when art, controversial or otherwise, sparks in-depth debate about societal norms. Crazy how this film is set in the 1960s, but is 100% relevant in 2018.

While the film is controversial, I quite enjoyed it.  A little melodramatic at times, and I don’t quite understand the HUGE acclaim it’s received. Political, maybe?

I took away a few key messages, one being a reminder that Black people are not monolithic. There is no Constitution on Blackness.

Also, special thanks Octavia Spencer for EP-ing! Shouts to you, Queen!
