Guava Island

The animated opening credits and introduction to the story was cool. Sort of wished it was intertwined throughout the film.

Gotta keep it  💯, I felt duped. The film felt like it was missing the second half of the second act and all of the third. Ambiguous endings are a trend in film, shorts and full features, but this story felt unfinished.

I appreciate the cast, but my trouble with casting Rihanna as the supporting character in this was that you can still see she has an awkwardness in her acting. They relied massively on her beauty to try to mask the flaws of her acting abilities. It was the premise that her beauty is what Deni (played by Donald Glover) is meant to trip over himself for throughout the film and there wasn’t really a sense of grand affection between the two characters. Felt forced AF.

Also, the screenplay felt disjointed. There were moments of no dialogue that lingered for a little too long and there were moments where I preferred the film coverage of the people, places, and things going on around them rather than whatever was scripted.

The shots of the island—the people, the music—were my faves.

Soundtrack was dope. I’d probably listen to the songs before I watch the film again.
