The third act killed this for me. The getting was good until the screenplay transformed a hallucinogenic-fueled 1960s murder mystery to a funhouse mirror version of “Psycho.”
“Last Night in Soho” is entertaining enough to keep the audience engaged in Eloise’s (Thomasin McKenzie) narrative as an aspiring fashion designer who moves to London from the UK countryside. Small town girl with big dream theme, ya know? But I was not convinced that continuous jump scares and cool editing was enough to save this film’s mise–en–scène.
Cool screenplay though—an imaginative, glossy ode to Alfred Hitchcock.

The ensemble cast was dope. I was super psyched to see Thomasin in a project since I last saw her in “JoJo Rabbit.” (I don’t count M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old.” 😬) Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith were great supporting mates.
But all of the love to Dame Diana Riggs, who passed away in September 2020. She was just as sharp as she was when she told Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Jaime Lannister to tell Cersei ‘bout her.
“Last Night in Soho” makes me want to do a deep dive into director Edgar Wright’s other works. I loved “Scott Pilgrim…” but missed the latter half of “Baby Driver.” I like his eye, but the third act thing is a bit intriguing. 🤔🧐
