“Nuevo Rico” is one of one.

The two-dimensional animation style reminded me of no other film. The short’s uniqueness shined through the breathtaking color palette, which balanced Barbie (voiced by Jackie Cruz) and Vico’s (Antonio Vizcarrondo) individual flair and the rich Afro-Rican aesthetics.

The turquoises and magentas jumped from the screen. I admired the shape manipulation when the characters moved across different backgrounds. The scenes of the twins in the womb broke up the 2-D style to add a bit of more dimension into the mix.

The language, tone, obscenities uttered throughout—it all felt cohesive and pure. And real.

I didn’t know I needed an animation like this, and now I need more. Even down to how the water moved in the ocean. 🔥🔥
