Operation Finale is a C-/D+ (at best) World War II/Holocaust film.
1. A poorly executed score really can ruin a movie.
2. Too many scenes were incredibly predictable.
3. It was difficult to pinpoint the climax on this one.
4. Some plot points seemed poorly paced, while others lack significant detail to assist the story’s narrative.
5. There were no standout performances, and with such a magnificent cast not only is that a difficult feat to achieve, it’s an absolute shame.
I was excited to see Ben Kingsley in a role that’s the total opposite of his character in “Schneider’s List.” I also loved that Mélanie Laurent, who played Shosanna in “Inglorious Basterds,” played a Jewish nurse in this film who wants to seek a similar revenge to a high-tier Nazi, mirroring her quest in “…Basterds” to murder Hitler in her Parisian cinema.
The opening credits’ design and music were too lively for such a serious subject matter.
As a war film aficionado, especially WWII films, I was disappointed with almost every element of this film’s mise-en-scène, except costuming and production design, and maybe acting.
Definitely ’twasnt “Dunkirk,” ’twasnt “Inglorious Basterds,” ’twasnt “Schindler’s List,” and it wasn’t trying to be–because comparison to these films would be unjust. But to be included in the genre’s company I’d say it’s definitely on the lower end on the list.
