Not e’en gon’ lie, but as soon as MGK uttered his first syllable, I knew right then that this was a 🥴🥴 in my book. But I gave it some room to grow. And, look, that’s not a shot at MGK’s potential—I like this new career venture, but the writing and directing in the first few scenes drew my excitement down a bit.
Positives:
— Loved seeing Dominique Fishback again! Bruh, I’ve been waiting to see her next project following her role on HBO’s “The Deuce.” She’s gonna be a huge star one day. I can feel it! Super talented.
— Hey, Chika, hey!!! You lit! 🔥 You’re having a hell of a year!
— Hey, JG-L, hey!!! 👀💋 (This crush I have is real. It’s decades in the making, bruh-bruh.)
— Hey, MGK!!! You’re doing great, sweetie!!! (I didn’t love you in this one, but generally you stay with an acting bag!)
— Country B. Vance just sneaking his way into the pictures is sending me! 😂😂 That man is a legend. Even in his cameo or bit roles, he still shines.
— Good on the aspect ratio decision. I don’t mind a deviation from the standard when it makes sense. Good use of those Arri Prime Lenses too. I be noticin’.
— I wasn’t too mad at the cinematography. There were some fire shots, especially during the first act. But after we hit the climax, a lot of the style seems repetitive and standard to too many other (better) action films.
Areas that made me go 🤨 🤨:
— The production had to be expensive! Had to be. Because as much as I didn’t love many elements, the CGI was decent. I had trouble with a few of the action sequence scenes that were a little too reminiscent of Blumhouse Productions low-budget films.
— The slow motion, hyperbolic, action-y conclusion sequence was hilariously bad, bruh.
— Crossing the same bridge at the beginning and end of the film was too “on-the-nose.” It was so tropey for the idea of “settling the dust” or “returning to normalcy.”
I am certain that 12-year-old me would’ve given this an A+, and would’ve rewatched it until she knew every word.
But on 16 AUG 2020, I thought:
-
- The trailer was better than the film.
- The writing was meh.
- And, the plot was recycled.
