Richard Nixon:
Getaway Driver

I saw the film’s title and I was ready to dig in…

But, uh…

Hmmmm…

The strain “Richard Nixon: Getaway Driver” pulled at its attempt to be either comedic or entertaining hurt my groin.

That’s hyperbolic AF (I know), but the synopsis was a bit misleading. I think expected a little too much of the idea. This could have been even more trippy and more outrageous than it was. That would’ve kept me engaged!! But, unfortunately, this short film felt longer than its six-minute runtime.

I liked the grainy imagery—totally “on brand” for cinema during the 1960s—had a bit of an archaic feel. Coupling the graininess with the brash, psychedelic colors of the trippy car ride as singer and JFK’s second assassination shooter Phil Ochs (played by D.W. Campbell) hopped into getaway car driven by President Richard M. Nixon (played by Denny Holmes) was…okay, but the overall tone lacked a je ne sais quoi.

The screenplay could have been elevated. The film’s title and aim had already set the bar high. I was hoping this short film would be so uncomfortably hilarious and cringeworthy that I couldn’t wait to discuss it with peers.

But alas, this film hit the bottom of the barrel for me. The overall tone, style, and narrative were not for me. 🥴🥴
