Would love to see this film transformed into a stage play—def felt awkward at moments. It’s basically a histrionic crash course in the history of a global icon. A structured mess of a biopic. Organized chaos. This highly-stylized oxymoronic dra-musical was an interesting watch. Throughout the watch, though, I could not decide if I was watching the best thing I’d ever seen, or the worst.
Awesome costuming and choreography!!! These elements, as well as good casting, may be the film’s saving graces.
On that note–Taron Egerton is a fine actor, and transformed into Sir Elton John. Though I kinda wished they’d trained his voice a little more to parallel Elton’s. Parts of the film had me totally convinced that I was watching a documentary of John’s most intimate moments. Then when he started singing (at moments) I hit a slight cringe.
The continuity editing and long takes were superb, and added some flair to any already exaggerated product. Pacing throughout the film, especially when supporting characters sang, did not work. I almost wished they’d gone with a traditional, formulaic musician’s biopic structure, but I get it…it’s Sir Elton Hercules John. Gotta do it up, baby!
