Sonic the Hedgehog

Número Uno: The $5 million “L” the studio took in re-designing Sonic was the best decision I’ve seen made in response to an overwhelming “awww, hell naw” raised from the general public after seeing the original trailer. So “Brava” to y’all. They’ll recoup that and other production costs in the first box office weekend, for sure.

Second: Tika Sumpter and James Marsden as a fictional couple is not something I’d ever imagined, but goddamnit I effin’ loved it! Brava to SEGA for stepping outside of convention and giving audiences a dose of reality.

Trois: not including Ben Schwartz’s name on the main promotional material irks me, and I can’t quite get over it. Like, I know he got his check either way, and that Marsden and (obvi) Jim Carrey are the bigger stars featured, but damn! Homie puttin’ in that work, and should have been recognized more.

James Carrey—*takes a deep breath*

⚡ I have waited for more than a decade to see classic Jim Carrey in a comedy.

⚡ I have waited for over a decade to laugh at the foolishness of his character acting.

⚡ I have waiting for ten goddamn years for something like “Ace Ventura” or “Liar Liar” or “Me Myself and Irene,” or “The Mask’s” Jim Carrey to pop back into pop culture, and alas…we get Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik. And damnit—it’s good’t!! The jokes and expressions were on point. I loved the banter with his sidekick. I can’t wait to see more from him. This was a much needed introduction to the generation that didn’t grow up with Jim at his peak.

Welcome back, James Eugene Carrey of Canada.

Sonic the Hedgehog was more than “a kid’s movie.” This film was also for those 80s and 90s babies who remember hearing “SEEEGGGAAA”  before playing Sonic. I really enjoyed the writing, though sometimes it appeared a bit elementary and regurgitated from other origin story adaptations-on-film. The action and comedy were well-balanced, and the visual effects were great!

Sonic the Hedgehog satisfied what I wished Pokémon Detective Pikachu could have. There were jokes for the kiddos, but so many for the 30+ crowd. While I understand the argument, and often agree, that there’s an over-abundance of screenplays adapted from different media (e.g., superhero, novels, etc.), I am not opposed to GOOD adaptations that stay true to the original story and brings new audiences into its fandom. Art is broad—adapt it, create your own, whatever. I’m always here to connect.
