The Batman

Y’all…

…that thang is three hours long.

…and even if you’re enjoying it, at the one-and-a-half hours mark, you’re still gonna ask yourself, “should I hold this tinkle in or should I take a chance and hope that I won’t miss anything plot-worthy?”

(I’d say go tinkle because…health, but you might regret it later and want to re-watch it all over again at some point.)

.

Ok, so the one thought I had when I left the theater was “I wish Eartha could see this. She’d love it.”

The Batman” exceeded my expectations. I was hoping for a drawn-down version of what we’ve already seen from Bruce Wayne’s backstory. I appreciated that they took the approach from Tom Holland‘s Spidey films in that the audience did not need to see Bruce’s parents die again, like…we get it.

I was hoping that Robert Pattinson‘s (R-Patz) take on the caped hero would be moody and angsty and wired a bit differently. R-Patz’s Bruce Wayne didn’t show off his wealth in the ways I had remembered as part of the profile from the other iterations of the character. He wasn’t a glammed-up socialite or networker with a traumatic past. Pattinson played the hero almost like he was ashamed of power, and he felt obligated to act and help, but not in a way that meant he should be glorified.

I quite enjoyed the scenes of him or his gadgets failing—it humanized him even more. He’s emo, but he cares? Idk. (so cute)

R-Patz had been putting in that work for years since “Twilight” to hone his arts and crafts. I’m pleased with his performance, but he isn’t the only one deserving of accolades.

.

Zöe Kravitz meant that she was gonna show y’all niggas she’s not to be fucked with.

Miss Mamma walked in and said nothing—like a bad bitch should.

I adored her in this role. It is lovely to see Zöe spread herself—she’s sharp and capable. I can’t wait until she takes it to the next level.

She is everything.

.

Also gotta give it to Paul Dano. That man has been W O R K I N G, goddamnit. He said “you want The Riddler?! Say less…”

I loved it.

.

John Turturro outchea doing what he does best—dropping some iconic heat in a blockbuster and then moving right along. That man is a legend.

Jeffrey Wright was a beautiful balancing character as “Lt. Gordon” and The Batman’s right-hand man.

Colin Farrell was completely unrecognizable as “The Penguin” and it was fantastic! Another one who’s been working the indie circuit for more than a decade honing that craft. I respek it. 🤌🏾🤌🏾

.

Loved seeing and super proud of Jay Lycurgo—he’s been one actor I’ve watched for a few years now—from the short film festival circuit to the mainstream. [POTENTIAL SPOILER AHEAD] I have a feeling he’s gonna be R-Patz’s Robin, and honestly…yes. It works! (Let’s go, king!!!)

And Andy Serkis as “Alfred.” I mean, who was the genius casting producer who thought of that! Alfred’s profile hopping from British legend to British legend without a beat missed. I loved it! He was a great addition.

😔😔 Moments:

I think after the first two hours, I questioned how Matt Reeves would wrap it up. Screenplay seemed to drag after Act II.

.

But, I think Reeves did right—set up the next villain (Barry Keoghan as “Joker” + his alliance with Dano’s “Riddler”) and leave Bruce’s relationship with Selina Kyle open to the imagination.

..

Either way, I’m in there.

My interest has been piqued. 👀👀
