Shawty likes a good western, and I think this one was pretty decent.
John C. Reilly + Joaquin Phoenix made a great duo. King Riz Ahmed + Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting were great casting decisions, bravo! I think seeing Ahmed in the trailer was the sell for me. Not too often do we see South Asian representation in the Western genre, so slow clap for the producer who was responsible for that decision, and let’s keep that energy going.
I’m not mad at this one at all, may even pick up the book. I will say the rising action was like a smoldering fire—it felt endless at moments, but the climax and falling action made up for it.
Also, if this film is a “comedy,” then so was “The Martian.” 🤔 I wouldn’t even characterize this as a dark comedy.
Berry Gordy scale: between a veggie Chipotle bowl and a ticket to this film, I’d take the ticket, but I’d probably daydream about that Chipotle bowl though.
