The Souvenir

A few things about this A24 Distribution:

1. I continue to appreciate A24’s varied narrative feature scope.

2. Oh how I miss the healthy debates of social issues of a particular time period filmed over a meal, or specifically across a dinner table. Respectful, healthy disagreement is so foreign now.

It’s hard to find today.

It can be stern, and unnerving, but without violence. No shouting. No tears. Just healthy debate.

3. The climax was subtle. Wild, but subtle and beautifully done. Then it was followed up by another I think. I couldn’t really tell where this film was going at points.  I got a sense of the director’s personal style, and it was not my favorite.

4. I appreciate when conversations about film perspectives are embedded within a film. A reminder that the visual arts and sciences have no rules, so even critiques should be re-evaluated sometimes (looks at myself).

5. Tilda Swinton is a chameleon. Every moment she was on screen, I was intrigued and I missed her when she wasn’t. She does small shit in tense moments that makes her portrayal of a character all the more actualized, and I appreciate her dedication to her characters even when the film isn’t superb.
